Decoy Media worked with Box of Tricks Theatre to produce two sets of images to promote the first run of Narvik by Lizzie Nunnery, at the Liverpool Playhouse Studio back in August and September 2015.
The play was met with such success that it has now embarked on a national tour starting with rehearsals at the Unity Theatre space in Liverpool. It was clear during this initial shoot that the team were all working hard to improve even further on the incredible critical reception it had received last time around. The space wasn’t hugely inspiring (especially compared to photographing on set where there is interesting lighting, lots of colour and texture) but not every project has a fascinating backdrop. We really strive to push creativity into any project and in any location and feel that the first set of images really show how this can be done.
Below are some images from the rehearsal, including an image from the 2015 project that can be seen featured as the national tour poster artwork:
A couple of weeks later and we were back to photograph the cast perform on set for the dress rehearsal at HOME Theatre in Manchester. The set had been altered slightly since the last edition due to it’s need to travel on the tour, but it still had all the features, colours and textures of the original.
Although the lighting in situations such as this can be challenging, the differing moods in scenes that bring a range of colours and brightnesses to the performance help to create very dramatic and contrasty images. This is great for their use as promotional tools for social media or on press releases as graphical content needs to stand out amongst a sea of other options, especially when being viewed on a mobile device.
As can be seen below one of the images from the dress rehearsal was featured alongside a write up for the play by The Guardian. Our client Box of Tricks Theatre was really happy with not only the end results but also the under 12 hour turnaround time.
