We were really excited to be asked by Alex and James Dee to take some press portraits to accompany their joint music project. Both are extremely talented musicians in their own right, playing in multiple bands and for this project combining the family talents.
When people think of band photography in Manchester it’s definitely a cliché to use the Northern Quarter as a location, but we really enjoy finding new locations within an area and never use the same spot twice. The streets and buildings have so much character in their design and textures, it makes for a great place to shoot.
Scouting locations in advance is key to making a photoshoot run smoothly, not only due to the background to the subjects, but also in working out where the light will be. Having a wet weather alternative is essential for a professional Manchester photographer and we were well looked after by both The Whiskey Jar and Piccadilly Records (many thanks to both!).
We utilised a couple of key outdoor locations and got some great results inside also. The fourth photo may appear to have been heavily photoshopped but really it was as simple as keeping Alex & James indoors and photographing them through a window.
Creative Artist Portraits
Having a set of creative artist portraits on hand is a clear statement to any agents, booking agents, venues or journalists that you are serious about your music. The images can also be used as social media content, on the artist’s website, promotional materials, album covers and CVs.
